I spent today trying to get organized by setting a schedule for this week’s work. There have been way too many distractions over the last couple of weeks. Basically, I have not been using my time as wisely as I could have, for example, spending three hours lost on Wikipedia today, but I do feel rather stress-free. I am also considering having my cable turned off, but only after tomorrow’s hockey game( Unless Boston wins. Then, I will turn it off after game 7).
[From the book jacket.] Elegantly crafted and quietly moving, Ch’oe Yun’s stories are among the most incisive portrayals of the psychological and spiritual reality of post-WWII Korea. Her fiction, which began to appear in the 1980s, represents a turn toward a more experimental, deconstructionist and postmodern Korean style of writing, and offers a new focus on the role of gender in the making of Korean American Books, Korean American Readings, Korean American authors

I have to do a bit of conversation analysis for one of my classes this semester. Since I wanted to analyze second language speakers, I invited a few of our friends over for Mexican food. I figured a meal and drinks would be an appropriate bribe for agreeing to be recorded.
Tequila helps the conversation flow
My Participants.
I have almost 7 hours of recorded conversation to wade through this week. I am not entirely sure about my final topic for the paper, but I am leaning towards analyzing the use of reactive tokens, such as ‘aha,’ hmm,’ and ‘yeah’ by nonnative speakers of English. My friend Zach came over as well, and I was very pleased to have a non-Korean speaker present. In the first couple of hours, the Korean speakers used Korean tokens when I was telling stories. Thankfully, they did not use these with Zach. Their use of Korean tokens would be interesting to analyze, but I am just not sure I want to go that route for this paper.
I am also enjoying the reading that is required for this class, and I have been lucky enough to find some really interesting articles that have been written about Korean students and their use of English. I regret that the class is extremely fast paced, and I feel like I really do not have the time to explore the topic further. It is still hard to believe that this class is over in a little over two weeks.
JJ and I have been grounded for the last month since we both have an insane amount of work for our classes. The weekends tend to be spent sleeping late and catching up on required reading (Me)/trying to get prepared for the week ahead (JJ). Even though we both have a ton of work to do, we decided on Friday night that we were going to wake up on Saturday and drive down to Gulfport. We have both been wanting to sample a burger from 5 Guys. We were not disappointed. The burgers were juicy and the amount of fries that came with the order could have fed a few people; We left with about a half a bag full of leftovers.
Yum. That would be about 5% of the fries that came with the order
You can already see where the grease was soaking through.
We left 5 Guys and decided to drop by the Island View Casino and spend 30 minutes or so playing the slots. We haven’t really gambled since our last trip to New Orleans about 4 to 5 months ago. We started playing at a couple of slot machines side by side, and then JJ decided that she wanted to play cards. She was gone about 20 to 30 minutes and later found me at a different slot machine. I had turned my dollars into 0, and I was starting to get the feeling that it was time to go. JJ said that she wanted to drop another and would be right back. I kept playing never really getting up more than 0. She came back and as we were getting ready to leave, I told her that I wanted to play one more pull at the max amount. Well, it hit and finally stopped at just above 0. Needless to say, It was a good day!
Not my machine, but you get the idea
We stopped by the outlet mall on the way home and tried not to blow all of our winnings. After paying for gas, lunch, and JJ’s shopping, we came out ahead about 0. It was a great day, and our profits will be placed in our travel fund. We are shooting for a few weeks in Europe next June, but it will depend on the balance of our travel fund. If I could keep hitting jackpots, the trip would be placed on the calender in permanent ink.
