Going through Indieful ROK’s last.fm group artist chart the 10th indie entry could be found on spot 39. Not as good as the first week of the year, but much better than last! This is a day late, but only because my ISP had some issues yesterday forcing all of their customers in my area to find other entertinament offline half the afternoon and all evening (I finally arranged all the recipes I’d written down/cut out of papers during the past seven years, or so so in the end I didn’t mind as much as I did initially).
Many jobs require workers to be working outside, this means in any sort of weather conditions. Rain is a weather conditions that can be very dangerous on any job site and can lead to a worker getting sick as well. If workers are not provided with the proper protection they are risking their health and safety. Jobs that require individuals to work roadside are especially dangerous in rainy, wet conditions. This is why rain gear is very important. It protects the worker from the elements but can also offer visibility for oncoming motorists. Often times jobs that require workers to work outside during bad weather conditions are hourly positions and they do not offer sick time. This is why it is important to wear the proper commercial rain gear.
Waterproof Materials
Commercial rain gear is popular when it comes to heavy duty protection from the elements. In addition to offering protection the rain gear should be made from waterproof materials and have high breathability. The worker must be protected from the rain and water conditions, but should not be uncomfortable in the rain gear. There are varying kinds of rain gear depending upon the occupation. Firemen for example need protection from water, but also from fire. Therefore they need flame resistant gear as well. There are other occupations where the workers are not allowed on a job site without proper rain protection.
Hazardous Conditions
Roadside workers need to have added protection from the weather and oncoming traffic. It is very important that their rain gear feature high visibility aspects so that oncoming motorists are aware of their presence. Rain gear for roadside crews will often feature reflective strips as well as bright fluorescent colors alert motorists. These features will allow for maximum protection for the worker on the roadside crew.
Rain Jackets
Another type of protective rain gear are rain jackets. They are not the heavy duty commercialized version of rain gear, but in certain circumstances are all that’s needed. The jacket is supposed to keep the upper part o the body dry from rain or water. Depending on weather conditions the jacket can be lightweight or be heavily lined.
Rain Pants And Bibs
Rain bibs and pants are meant to keep the lower half of the body dry. They come in different styles and can be lined for cold climates as well. Many types of rain pants have elastic to help support the pants and keep them from falling under the rain coat. Rain bibs usually have suspenders attached to the pants and can be ideal to ensure no water comes in from under the rain coat. Rain bibs are ideal for those who may be working in different positions and moving around a lot during the day.
Rain Ponchos
Rain ponchos are perfect if someone may come into contact with rain but will probably only be exposed for short periods of time. Delivery personnel and even police officers spend much of their day in a vehicle where wearing a full set of bibs and a jacket would be cumbersome and uncomfortable. These occupations require something light weight that can be stowed easily, put on quickly and removed when not in use. A rain poncho is an ideal type of rain gear for these occupations. The ANSI safety vests also come in different colors and can also be highly visible if the job requires it.
Yes, we do have ice hockey in Mississippi (with real ice and everything). In fact, we have two teams that compete in the SPHL, a lower-level minor hockey league. Years ago, my friends and I would attend Mississippi Sea Wolves’ games in Biloxi, MS. At that time, the Sea Wolves were coached by Bruce Boudreau, who now coaches the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. The Mississippi Sea Wolves were part of the East Coast Hockey League, but the team was dissolved in 2009. In 2010, hockey came back to the coast with the formation of the Mississippi Surge.
JJ and I went to Biloxi on Sunday and were excited that we were going to be able to see an in-state match-up. The Riverkings from north Mississippi made their way to Biloxi to do battle with the Surge. We arrived about 15 minutes before they dropped the puck and were able to score excellent seats; we were right on the glass. There were probably only 400 spectators, but the atmosphere was still exciting. I have seen a number of games, but this was JJ’s first, and she got to see an excellent game with lots of action directly in front of us. The Surge led most of the game, but the Riverkings tied it up with less than two minutes to play. The overtime period was a special treat. The overtime period in SPHL games lasts for only 5 minutes, but each team plays with only three skaters and a goalie. Even though the Surge lost in the last minute of overtime, the game was great, and we both really enjoyed the fast pace of the three on three hockey.
Our tickets were each, but we could have had decent seats off the glass for around . It was not NHL caliber hockey, but the players really battled to the end. I was hoping that JJ would get to see a fight, but there were only a few skirmishes. I think this is the first game that I attended that did not have at least one fight. JJ did enjoy the game, and I just need to figure out how I can convince her that we need to travel to Nashville, Dallas, or St. Louis to see an NHL game. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be able to see any of those teams play for a ticket.
For more information about schedules and tickets, check out the Surge’s homepage here.
The prized game fish, Makaira Indica, more commonly known as Black Marlin, is one of the world’s fastest fish. It reaches speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Generally weighing in at 1700 pounds, or 750 kilograms, larger beasts have been reportedly caught by Black Marlin Charters. M. Indica is of the Perciformes order of fish and dwells in the coastal surface waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Greenpeace
Makaira and other genera are on Greenpeace’s seafood red list. What this means is that they are very likely to be drawn from unsustainable sources. This is why the modern sport fisherman will capture them humanely, photograph them for posterity and return them to the sea from whence they came. Genus Makaira is from the same family, Istiophoridae, as the Hawaiian Silver Marlin and the Japanese White.
Ernest Hemingway
In the novel, ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, written by Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), old salt, Santiago, finally manages to break a 12-week dry spell by hooking a member of Makaira. The rest of the novel goes on to describe the hero’s legendary battle against the combined forces of the fierce, resolute beast and Mother Nature.
Fins
Strictly speaking, Makaira Indica is not black. It is dark blue and white. Only the rigid pectoral fins and the tail fins are black. It has a less rounded shape than its blue cousin and its ventral fins rarely exceed one foot long, regardless of how big the fish is. It prefers the warm, coastal waters of the tropics and the subtropics. Rarely, it has been seen to cross the Atlantic Ocean via the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa as far southwest as Brazil and northwest to the Lesser Antilles.
Fishing Tours
Some of the most popular tours for M. Indica cruise the waters of Australia’s east coast. Roughly 70 per cent of all Makaira larger than 1000 pounds in weight have been found along a 150-mile long section of the Great Barrier Reef located off the coast at Cairns. The combined hauls of Portugal, Brazil and Hawaii only amount to half this collective mass.
Game Fish
Brisbane’s Gold Coast is a favorite spot for light tackle enthusiasts seeking M. Indica as well as other game fish. Here fishermen can trawl for Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel and Mia Mia and others. Bottom fishers (‘jiggers’) gather to haul in Snapper, Peal Perch, Kingfish and Cobia.
Port Stephens
More than twice the size of Sydney Harbor, Port Stephens on Australia’s south west coast is a world class center for Black Marlin Fishing. With its breathtaking scenery, clear waters and golden, sandy beaches, it attracts other tourists as well. Tours from here operate between the months of January and April.

My family and I have been cheering for the Saints for many years now. I don’t really remember the ‘Aints” era, but I do know that it is saying a lot when Saint’s fans are disappointed by a close loss in the second round of the playoffs versus disappointed with an entire season. I hate that they did not win today, but it really was a great game, and should a team really win when they have 5 turnovers? I think that my heart rate has finally returned to normal; I really thought thought that they had pulled it off with that touchdown by Jimmy Graham in the last two minutes, but Alex Smith and the 49er offensive was just too strong. I hope that during the off-season they can pick up a number of players to improve the defense. Here’s to next year, and at least that loss was from the 49ers and not the Falcons.
Just for the record, B.B. and I share the same hometown. He still makes it back to Indianola, MS once a year for a summer concert.
